The Archipelago trial run
Jain Fal Orech-
The only child of her father, she has two older step brothers, an older step sister, and two half sisters. Her mother re-married after her father was lost at sea. Jain’s mother re-married outside of the clan, but Jain was allowed to keep her clan status. Her home, until last year, was the winter capital. Being more of her father’s son, she much prefers life in Giant’s Teeth. Before her two years of naval service, Jain got sick of life in the city, and constantly being around her step-father’s children, whom she regards as indolent and spoiled. After her service, Jain packed up a mule, and without telling anyone but a house slave and her swords instructor, he move to Giant’s teeth to live in the men’s house with her cousins. She goes by the “Deerborn” name when dealing with coastal/inland people, and “Orech” with people from the islands, where his father was from, and highly regarded. Jain has grown up in Giant’s Teeth for the most part, with her life in the city only lasting a few years. She’s quite close to her cousins, Allen in particular. While she knows some of her father’s family, it’s the Deerborn side of the family that she mostly takes after. Fatherless, she’s had occasional instruction from her uncles in things both maritime and martial, including boxing. Her step-father was also trying to have her instructed in politics, refinement, and trading, but almost none of it stuck. Jain also has some financial resources that her cousins do not. While she does not flaunt this, it was Jain that has backed the roe hunting/selling enterprise, paying for the jars and the preservation of the roe. Benefiting from a proper urban education, Jain is not only a first-class swordsmen, has drilled with his shield and spear extensively, has used a proper crossbow, and can box. She’s tougher than his slight frame would suggest, and ambidextrous, often switching guards to fool opponents. Jain has spent some time in the woods and trails. Also, she’s been somewhat forced into polite society, and while she’s not quite the sailor that her cousins are, has some of the graces that they don’t. Physical- Slight and dark-complected, dark-haired, with light green/gray eyes. Though tall, she tends to try to hide this by posturing himself smaller. Personality at a glance- Quiet, tempermental, and emotional. Quick to smile, quick to anger, quick to forgive, though also capable of holding a grudge. He has a quiet, mean temper when crossed, but among friends and those he trusts, is gregarious and friendly. Allayad- Jain has a deep love and respect for Allayad, but occasionally butts heads with him, challenging Allayad’s status as the de facto leader of the group. They have a mutual love of exploration and share a curiosity that drives them into many situations. Jain’s ability to find trails on land and navigate the woods compliments Allayad’s abilities on water. Deerborn- Jain and Deerborn find themselves at odds more often than any others in the group. Deerborn is willing to back Allayad completely, something that Jain finds annoying and somewhat sycophantic. While she doesn’t resent Deerborn’s more cautious nature, she does goad him often. They’ve broken out into fisticuffs twice. Jain trounced Deerborn the first time, boxing. The second time, Deerborn got Jain on the ground, where Deerborn’s skill as a wrestler won out. Allen- While Allayad engages Jain’s love of exploration, Allen has a near mystical hold on Jains innate curiosity. Allen and Jain can sit for hours, talking about history, geography, religion, and anything else that Allen can tell Jain about. After Jain’s return from the city, the fascination became mutual, with Jain telling Allayad all about life in the capital, the Imperial garrison there, and everything else. Currently, Allen is teaching Jain to read.
